The CAPM® or Certified Associate in Project Management is the certification awarded by PMI to people who meet the organization's qualifications. The qualifications include hours as a professional project manager, passing an exam and coursework. In addition, to maintain the certification the person must continue his or her education with Professional Development Units (PDU).

The CAPM certification requires less experience than the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. The exam for both certifications is the same, but fewer correct answers are required for the CAPM.

The prerequisites for the CAPM exam are

  • Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent) and 1,500 hours of project experience
    OR
  • 23 hours of project management education completed by the time you sit for the exam
