Colocation is one of the tools and techniques for the PMI process to develop project team. Some teams find it easier to function or to form ground rules when they physically in the same place.

Comparison to virtual teamsEdit

Colocated teams are in the same place (or near enough to easily get together). In contrast virtual teams are spread over a distance that makes meeting in person difficult. With current technology for file sharing, video and audio conferencing, more teams are virtual. However, there are still some advantages to colocation. Colocated teams can use more of their physical environment to coordinate (such as bulletin boards, physical models). Colocated teams are more likely to have the same time zone, to share customs, languages, and work hours.
