The project management plan will guide many of the other processes in the project. So the develop project management plan process is important. This PMI process is part of the planning process group and in the project integration management knowledge area.
Because it occurs early in the project, there may not be much existing documentation when this process begins. However, since the project management plan is an integrating and guiding document, it feeds into many other processes. And those processes in turn may identify places where the project management plan needs to be updated.
During planning phases, like this one, it may be useful to review the lessons learned from previous projects, which are part of the organizational process assets. This way the project can benefit from knowledge gained in earlier projects.
According to the PMBOK, this activity has the following characteristics:
|Inputs||Tools and Templates||Outputs|
|project charter, outputs from other processes, enterprise environmental factors, organizational process assets||expert judgment, facilitation techniques||project management plan|
