Document analysis is one of the tools and techniques for the PMI process to collect requirements. By looking at existing documentation, you can identify some of the requirements. Some documents that can be helpful are business plans, marketing literature, agreements, current process flows, requests for proposal, logical data models, and interface documentation.

Document analysis is described in section of the PMBOK, 5th edition.
