The End - Closing

Closing is the last of the five PMI process groups. It consists of all the processes needed to finish a project, phase or contractual obligation. A project may be closed because it is completed or because it was cancelled.

Part of closing a project is handing it off to on-going operations. When a project is not properly closed, it may ultimately fail in its objective.

Another advantage of closing a project is the collection of lessons learned. Even when a project was not successful, these lessons can help future projects to avoid the same pitfalls. When a project succeeded, this is an opportunity to acknowledge the people whose contributions were especially valuable. And it helps to point out what factors made the project successful, so they can be repeated.
