Information management systems are used to manage and distribute information. They include older "hard-copy" methods, such as memos and physical documents, electronic communications systems, such as email, conferencing, and web publishing, and electronic project management tools, such as project management software, scheduling, virtual meeting, collaborative and office support systems.

Information management systems are listed as one of the tools and techniques for the PMI processes to control communications, control stakeholder engagement, manage communications.
