The internal rate of return (IRR) is a financial measurement that estimates how much value a project or business initiative is likely to produce. It can be positive, zero, or negative. The IRR can be used to compare different projects to determine which is likely to be the best use of available resources.

Usually the IRR takes into account the net present value (or value of money over time).
