One of the four strategies PMI gives for handling negative risks or threats is mitigate risk. With this strategy, the team reduces the chances of the risk occurring or the impact of the risk. For instance, by increasing the testing, system redundancy, or by simplifying the process or deliverables, the probability can be lowered. Another strategy for mitigating risk is training.

Other strategies for handling negative risks are avoid risk, transfer risk, or accept risk.
