A strong matrix organizational structure is similar to a projectized structure where authority is primarily held by the project manager. But in the strong matrix structure the functional manager still holds some management and resource authority. In a strong matrix organization, the project manager is a full-time role who manages the project budget. In addition, the administrative staff is full-time on the project.

Other organizational structures are functional, weak matrix, balanced matrix, or projectized. An organization may use different structures in various parts.
