The to complete performance index (TCPI) is one of the tools and techniques for the PMI process to control costs. It is described in the PMBOK 5th edition, section 7.4.2.3.

The TCPI can be calculated two ways. The equations are

TCPI = (BAC-EV) / (BAC-AC)

or

TCPI = (BAC-EV) / (EAC-AC)

The TCPI is the cost performance needed for the rest of the project in order to meet a specified goal -- usually the budget at completion (BAC) or estimate at completion (EAC).
