Work performance data is collected as part of the process for directing and managing project work. The data is an input to multiple PMI processes. That means it must be gathered in order to perform those processes. The PMBOK defines work performance data as "the raw observations and measurements identified during activities being performed to carry out the project work." Once the data is analyzed, the work performance information gained is integrated into the project.

PMBOK Edition Confusion warning: In the 4th edition of the PMBOK, the older term for work performance data was work performance information. And in the 4th edition performance measurements was the term that is now called work performance information.
